Hizbollah and Lebanon: The Curse of a State

OpenDemocracy

5/21/2008

Robert G. Rabil

In this provocative analysis, Robert G. Rabil explores how Hezbollah’s rise has eroded the very institutions meant to safeguard Lebanon. He argues that by operating as a parallel state—commanding military power and social services while remaining outside formal governance—Hezbollah has shifted the balance away from legitimate sovereignty. Despite its claims to defend Lebanon, this dualist power structure deepens sectarian divides and weakens state legitimacy. Rabil’s essay underscores the urgent need to reclaim governance and unity from sub-state actors cloaked in legitimacy.
